A startup called Rock Zero is moving to commercialize a novel extraction process that could dramatically lower both the cost and environmental impact of lithium production. The technology, developed through university research, targets a major bottleneck in the global shift to electric vehicles and renewable energy storage.
Traditional lithium extraction relies on either evaporating brine in large ponds, which takes months and consumes vast amounts of water, or hard-rock mining, which is energy-intensive and produces significant carbon emissions. Rock Zero's method uses a chemical process that pulls lithium directly from clay and other low-grade ores without the need for high-temperature roasting or harsh acids.
Early tests suggest the process can recover up to 90 percent of the lithium in a given sample, compared to roughly 60 percent for conventional hard-rock methods. The company claims the approach also cuts energy use by half and reduces greenhouse gas emissions by roughly 70 percent per ton of lithium produced.
The timing is critical. Analysts project that global lithium demand could triple by 2030 as automakers ramp up battery production. Current supply chains are strained, and many proposed mines face regulatory delays or local opposition over water use and waste.
Rock Zero plans to build a pilot plant within the next 18 months, with a full-scale facility targeted for 2027. The company is in talks with mining firms in Australia and the United States about licensing the technology. If scaled successfully, the process could unlock vast reserves of lithium that were previously considered too costly or dirty to extract.
