Resisting the Myth of Inevitable Technology

Resisting the Myth of Inevitable Technology

Artificial intelligence is changing how we talk to each other, what jobs look like for millions of people, how friendships and partnerships develop, and the way we structure our daily routines. Much of the public reaction to these developments comes from a shared sense that this technology holds real power to redirect the path humanity takes into the coming decades.

But there is a growing problem in how we talk about AI. Too often, the conversation frames these changes as unavoidable. The language of inevitability creeps into news coverage, corporate announcements, and even casual discussion. We hear that AI will transform industries, that certain jobs will disappear, that adaptation is the only option. This framing is not neutral. It discourages critical thinking and shuts down debate about whether these changes are actually desirable or necessary.

The idea of technological necessity is a myth. No piece of technology arrives without human choices behind it. Every system, every algorithm, every deployment of AI reflects decisions made by specific people with specific priorities. When we treat these developments as natural forces like weather or gravity, we give up our ability to question them.

Resisting false necessity means asking hard questions. Who benefits from this technology? Who loses? What values are embedded in the design? What alternatives exist that we are not considering? These questions are not anti-progress. They are the foundation of genuine progress that serves people rather than the other way around.

We do not have to accept every AI application simply because it is possible. We can choose. And that choice is the most important thing we have.
