Volvo Cars announced on Tuesday that it has received official approval from the United States government to continue importing and selling vehicles equipped with Chinese-developed "connected car" technology. The decision allows the Swedish automaker, which is owned by China's Geely, to avoid a potential disruption to its North American supply chain.
The approval comes amid heightened scrutiny in Washington regarding data security and the use of Chinese technology in vehicles sold on American soil. U.S. regulators have been reviewing the potential risks posed by connected systems that can transmit location data, driving habits, and other personal information. Volvo's connected car features include over-the-air software updates, navigation, and emergency assistance services.
The company confirmed that its systems meet the necessary security standards set by U.S. authorities. While Volvo did not disclose the specific terms of the agreement, the clearance is seen as a significant win for the automaker, which relies on its Chinese parent company for key components and software. Without this approval, Volvo would have faced the prospect of redesigning its vehicles or halting imports of certain models.
The ruling also sets a precedent for other automakers using Chinese-sourced connectivity technology. Industry analysts note that the decision could influence ongoing trade discussions between the U.S. and China regarding automotive data security. Volvo has stated it remains committed to transparency and compliance with all local regulations as it expands its electric vehicle lineup in the American market.
