The Pennsylvania Institute of Technology held its commencement exercises this week, celebrating 123 students who completed their programs and are now fanning out across the region to fill critical roles in health care. The graduates, many of whom pursued degrees in nursing, medical assisting, and health information technology, are entering a workforce that has faced persistent staffing shortages since the pandemic.
Due to ongoing renovations at the school's main campus, the ceremonies were held off-site at a local convention center. School officials said the change of venue did not dampen the spirit of the day. "This class showed incredible resilience," said the institute's president during the keynote address. "They completed clinical rotations during a time of great strain on our hospitals, and they are ready to serve."
Several graduates spoke about the hands-on training that prepared them for the demands of the job. One new nurse noted that the program's emphasis on real-world scenarios gave her confidence to step onto a hospital floor immediately. Another graduate, who earned a certificate in phlebotomy, said she already has a job lined up at a regional medical lab.
The institute plans to return to its main campus for future ceremonies once the renovations are complete later this year. For now, the 123 graduates join a growing network of alumni working in health care facilities across the state.
