The National Science Foundation has awarded funding for 12 new Regional Innovation Engines, a program designed to boost research, strengthen ties between academia and industry, and drive economic growth across different parts of the country. Among the selected projects is a major initiative focused on quantum technologies, an area seen as critical for future computing, sensing, and secure communications.
These "Engines" are meant to act as hubs, bringing together universities, private companies, nonprofit groups, and local governments. The goal is to turn scientific discoveries into real-world products and jobs more quickly. Each engine will focus on a specific region and a specific technological challenge, from advanced manufacturing to climate resilience.
The quantum technologies engine will work to build a workforce and supply chain for quantum devices, which could revolutionize fields like drug discovery and cybersecurity. Other funded engines will tackle issues like improving semiconductor production, creating new materials for clean energy, and developing smart systems for agriculture.
NSF officials say the program is about investing in places that have strong research potential but may not have historically received large federal grants. By spreading resources across more regions, the agency hopes to create a more balanced and resilient national innovation ecosystem. The total investment for these 12 engines is expected to reach several hundred million dollars over the next decade, with the first phase of funding starting immediately.
