New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani announced on Monday the launch of what he calls Public Interest Technology Crews, or PIT Crews. The democratic socialist state assembly member framed the initiative as a direct response to the city's often frustrating digital bureaucracy. The new teams will be deployed to help residents navigate complex government websites, apply for benefits, and resolve issues with city services that have moved online.
Mamdani argued that the current system leaves many New Yorkers, particularly seniors, immigrants, and low-income families, stranded. "Technology should make life easier, not put up more walls between people and the help they need," he said during the announcement. The PIT Crews will consist of trained volunteers and staff who can assist with tasks like filing for housing assistance, renewing identification, or contesting a parking ticket.
The proposal is part of a broader platform focused on making city hall more accessible. Mamdani has previously criticized the de Blasio and Adams administrations for what he calls a "digital divide" that punishes those without reliable internet access or tech literacy. By station these crews in libraries, community centers, and public housing developments, his campaign hopes to turn a campaign promise into a tangible service before the primary election. The move positions technology access as a core equity issue in the crowded mayoral race.
