A significant milestone has been reached in a clinical study evaluating the effectiveness of MicroPulse technology as an adjunct to anti-VEGF therapy for patients suffering from diabetic macular edema (DME). The study, spearheaded by principal investigator Professor Noemi Lois, MD, PhD, FRCS(Ed), FRCOphth, at Queen’s University Belfast, aims to recruit a total of 264 patients across more than 20 clinical sites in the UK.
This innovative research seeks to determine whether the combination of MicroPulse technology with existing anti-VEGF treatments can enhance patient outcomes in those with severe DME. The condition, characterized by fluid buildup in the retina, is a leading cause of vision loss among individuals with diabetes. By exploring new therapeutic options, the study hopes to provide valuable insights into improving treatment efficacy and patient quality of life.
As the first patient has now been enrolled, the research team is optimistic about the potential benefits that could arise from this pioneering approach. The findings from this study could pave the way for more effective management strategies for DME in the future.
