ASTRI and NAMI merger begins yielding hybrid AI and materials technologies

The merger between ASTRI and NAMI is already delivering practical results, combining information and communications technology with advanced materials science. Dr Ying Huang, Chief Technology Officer of ASTRI, says the integration is producing stronger solutions in robotics and sensing that would have been harder to achieve separately.

Speaking about the early outcomes, Dr Huang explained that the hybrid approach allows researchers to embed AI directly into material design. Instead of treating hardware and software as separate layers, the combined team can now develop smart materials that sense, process, and respond in real time. This has immediate applications in industrial robotics, where lighter and more durable materials are paired with adaptive control systems.

One area showing early promise is tactile sensing. By merging material science with machine learning, the team has created sensors that can detect subtle pressure and texture changes. These are being tested for use in collaborative robots that work alongside humans, where safety and precision are critical.

Dr Huang also noted that the merger has streamlined research pipelines. Projects that once required handoffs between two organizations now move faster under one roof. The result is a tighter feedback loop between material development and system integration.

While still in early stages, the collaboration is already shifting how the organization approaches innovation. Rather than incremental improvements, the goal is to create entirely new product categories where AI and materials are inseparable from the start.
