It took 40 years for technology to catch up to this zipper design

A zipper concept that was first sketched out four decades ago is finally becoming a reality, thanks to modern technology. Researchers at MIT's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) have created a system that allows users to design and 3D print a special type of fastener known as a "Y-zipper." Unlike a standard zipper that joins two sides, this design uses three interlocking tracks, allowing it to connect multiple panels or create complex, curved seams.

The new system lets people customize these three-sided zippers for a wide range of uses. They can be attached to camping equipment, like tents or sleeping bags, to quickly change their shape or stiffness. In medical gear, the fasteners could help adjust braces or supports. The technology also has applications in robotics, where a robot's structure could switch between soft and rigid states on demand, and in art installations that need to transform their form.

The key breakthrough is the ability to 3D print these complex fasteners as a single, integrated piece. This makes them strong enough for real-world use while still being flexible. The design process is handled by a new software tool that guides the user through the geometry, ensuring the zipper teeth mesh correctly. After forty years of waiting for the right manufacturing methods, the Y-zipper is finally ready to zip up the gap between soft and hard materials.
