AMD's stock is climbing sharply, pushing the chipmaker's total market value past JPMorgan Chase for the first time. The surge comes after the company announced major upgrades to its memory technology, a move that investors see as a direct challenge to Nvidia's dominance in the fast-growing AI chip market.
Shares rose more than 8% in early trading, bringing AMD's market capitalization close to $900 billion. That puts it ahead of the largest U.S. bank by assets, a milestone that seemed unlikely just a year ago. The rally was fueled by details on new high-bandwidth memory modules that will be paired with AMD's upcoming MI300X AI accelerators. These modules, built using advanced stacking techniques, promise to significantly boost data throughput for large language models and other AI workloads.
Analysts say the memory upgrade is critical for AMD to compete with Nvidia's H100 and B100 chips, which currently dominate data center AI deployments. "This closes the gap on memory bandwidth, which was one of the last major advantages Nvidia held," said a semiconductor analyst. "It gives cloud providers a real alternative."
The news also lifted other semiconductor stocks, as investors bet on broader demand for AI hardware. AMD's CEO emphasized that the new memory technology will be available to customers in the current quarter, faster than some expected. The company is now valued at roughly $890 billion, trailing only Nvidia, TSMC, and Intel among chipmakers.
