AARP Alabama is warning residents about a new twist on an old scam that involves fraudsters posing as Publishers Clearing House and using Apple's FaceTime technology to appear more legitimate. The scam typically begins with a phone call or a text message claiming the recipient has won a large cash prize or a luxury car. The caller then insists that in order to claim the winnings, the victim must pay upfront fees using gift cards or wire transfers.
What makes this version particularly dangerous is the use of FaceTime. Scammers are now requesting video calls to build trust and create a false sense of authenticity. During the call, they may show fake credentials or even a counterfeit check. AARP Alabama officials emphasize that real sweepstakes never ask winners to pay fees to receive a prize. They also note that legitimate companies like Publishers Clearing House do not contact winners by phone or text to demand payment.
Residents are urged to hang up immediately if they receive such a call. Anyone who believes they have been targeted should report the incident to local law enforcement and the Alabama Attorney General's office. The best defense, according to AARP, is simply to ignore any unsolicited message promising money in exchange for a fee.
